This is a real practice we ran with our 8 and 9-year-olds. Nothing exotic. Five games stitched together. Every kid moved the entire time. They asked to play it again the next week.

Opener · Reset the kids
Soft balls, cones for a center line, two teams. Standard rules. Get them sweating before you start coaching.
Coach note: Don't skip this thinking it's wasted time. The kids who show up tight and quiet are the kids who can't focus 20 minutes later. Dodgeball flushes that out.

Throwing · Warm up arms with a purpose
Pair up. Start 15 ft apart. Every clean exchange, take a step back. Miss it, stay. Drop it, step in. Last partners standing win.
Coach note: By the third round, they're throwing across the outfield. Their arms are warmer than any static catch drill could get them. And they're competing.

Fielding + Throwing · The skill that wins rec ball
Pairs. Sprint to the outfield. One player goes to the ball, one stops as cutoff. Throw, listen for the call, relay it home. Time them.
Coach note: This is the most important 15 minutes of the practice. Cutoff and relay is the single biggest defensive skill at this age. Make it a race and they learn it in a week.

Fielding · Soft hands, two hands, focus
No gloves. Coach hits tennis balls with a racket into the field. Catch one = 3 outs, inning over. Teams flip. Score by inning length.
Coach note: The bare-hands constraint forces good catch mechanics in a way no glove drill can. And catch-equals-inning-over means every kid actually goes after the ball.

Closer · The thing they go home talking about
Tuck hats into belts. Free-for-all. Grab other hats, protect yours. Last one with a hat wins. Two rounds.
Coach note: Closing on a laugh is everything. The kids leave the field smiling. That's the moment they decide they want to come back next week.
What You'll Notice

There is no isolated tee work. No isolated long toss. No "everybody field 10 ground balls."

That's intentional. Every minute of this practice has at least one of these three things happening:

  1. Competition — stakes that don't matter but feel like they do
  2. Decision-making — reading, reacting, choosing
  3. Multiple kids moving — never one kid working while ten stand around

That's not a coaching theory. That's how kids actually learn baseball.
